Octopus closure Demarcation in Pombwe Village- May 1, 2025

On May 1, 2025, the Kilwa District BMU Network conducted a field visit to Pombwe Village to support the implementation of a new reef closure site. In collaboration with the local Beach Management Unit (BMU) and fishers,

the team successfully installed buoys to clearly mark the boundaries of the closed fishing area. This demarcation exercise followed prior agreements made with the Pombwe community through inclusive planning and consultation meetings. The marked boundaries will guide fishers, helping to protect critical marine habitats and allow for the natural recovery of marine life. Support Provided to Pombwe BMU To ensure effective protection of the closed area, the Kilwa District BMU Network provided fuel support. This will enable the BMU to conduct regular patrols and monitoring activities, ensuring that the closure rules are respected and enforced throughout the designated period. Expected Outcomes The closure and boundary demarcation are expected to contribute to: • Improved regeneration of fish and octopus stocks • Reduced fishing pressure, allowing ecosystems to recover • Strengthened local capacity for marine resource monitoring and enforcement • Increased community ownership and participation in marine conservation initiatives Community Collaboration for Conservation The Kilwa District BMU Network is pleased with the strong collaboration and commitment shown by the Pombwe community. This effort demonstrates the importance of community-driven marine conservation and highlights the potential of locally led solutions in promoting sustainable fisheries management. This activity is part of the broader strategy to support ecosystem restoration and sustainable livelihoods through octopus in Kilwa District.
