Successful Learning Exchange Visit Strengthens BMU Capacity
From June 22nd to 26th, 2025, the Kilwa District BMU Network, together with Kilwa District Council, organized a learning exchange visit to Pangani, Mkinga, and Muheza Districts.
This important trip brought together BMU leaders and key stakeholders from Kilwa to share experiences and learn best practices in fisheries governance, sustainable marine resource management, and revenue collection.
During the visit, participants explored inspiring examples of community-led marine conservation. Highlights included artificial reef restoration projects, octopus closures, and the innovative VSLA livelihood initiative.
These activities sparked rich discussions and valuable knowledge exchange among coastal practitioners, broadening everyone’s understanding of new approaches and challenges in managing coastal fisheries.
This visit is a big step forward in building the capacity of BMU leaders in Kilwa to adopt and replicate successful models, improving the governance of Collaborative Fisheries Management Areas (CFMAs) across the district.
