Fisheries Data Collection Training Empowers 13 BMUs in Kilwa -May 23–24, 2025
The Kilwa District BMU Network successfully conducted a two-day training workshop on fisheries data collection for 13 Beach Management Units (BMUs) across the District.
The training focused on strengthening the capacity of BMU data committees to collect daily fisheries catch and effort data accurately and consistently.
Training Objective
To equip BMU committee members with the skills and knowledge needed for routine data collection, supporting informed decision-making and sustainable marine resource management at the local level.
Progress and Next Steps
The data collection is proceeding smoothly, with all trained committee members actively involved. Upon completion of the 40-day exercise:
Daily data collection will continue as part of each BMU’s routine activities;
The Kilwa District BMU Network will use the data to inform conservation planning, reef closures, and resource use decisions.

Coordinating community patrols to monitor illegal fishing and resource use while promoting compliance with national fisheries regulations.
